Dubai Metro Zones

The Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) has divided Dubai into 7 different zones. At present, Dubai Metro runs through Zone 1, Zone 2, Zone 5 and Zone 6. On the other hand, Zone 3, Zone 4 and Zone 7 are covered by Dubai Trams, Buses and Water Buses.

Dubai Metro Zones

Here I provide the Dubai Metro Zones Map with Red Line, Green Line and Tram Line information with all station names. It also shows the three zones (Zone 3, 4 and 7) that are outside Dubai Metro and covered by other modes of transport.

Dubai Metro Zones

Dubai Metro Zones play an important role in management of public transport system and fare calculation. The RTA authorities have set a method to create a transparent Nol fare calculation that everyone can understand.

How Are Nol Fares Calculated?

The Nol Fares are calculated based on a number of zones traveled by the passenger. If you travel in the Dubai Metro from Zone 2 to Zone 6, your Nol Fare will be calculated & charged for two zones. Because the Zone 2 & 6 are adjacent/neighbor zones i.e. share same border.

In case you travel from Zone 2 to Zone 5 then the Dubai Metro will take you through Zone 6 in between. Therefore your Nol Fare will be charged for three zones i.e. Zone 2, Zone 6 and Zone 5. The same rule is applicable if you use different modes of public transport in Dubai including Metro Trains, Trams, Buses and Water Buses.

After you travel through Dubai Metro from Zone 2 to Zone 5, you can take a bus to go to Zone 4. If you take the bus within 30 minutes of exiting Metro, your Nol Fare will be calculated for both trips together.

In case you cannot take a bus within 30 minutes of exiting Metro, the RTA will charge Nol Fare separately for each trip. Changing the mode of transport from Metro Train to Bus, Tram or Water Bus is called Transfer and is allowed if the trip finishes within 180 minutes.

Dubai Metro Transfer Rules

The passenger traveling through Dubai public transport is allowed to transfer from one mode to the other up to 3 times within 180 minutes. Further details are given below.

Trip/Journey TypeMaximum Transfer AllowedMaximum Journey Duration
Within one Zone3180 Minutes
Two Adjacent/Neighboring Zones3180 Minutes
More than Two Zones3180 Minutes

As shown in the above table, you can transfer your mode of transport up to 3 times in the duration of 180 minutes. You can travel within one zone or through multiple zones, your fare will be calculated as soon as you finish 3 transfers or 180 minutes, whichever is earlier.

Nol Fares Based on Dubai Metro Zones

As I said above, Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) calculates Nol fares (ticket prices) based on Dubai Metro Zones. But your ticket price can be different from the other person on same trip because of a different Nol Card. Here I provide the list of Nol Cards and Ticket Prices/Fares information in detail.
